EdukSine is proud to announce the successful launch of its latest initiative, SineMasa, which aims to bring Filipino independent films to remote communities across the Philippines. SineMasa made a significant impact in Buscalan Village in Tinglayan, Kalinga on June 20, 2024, and Conner, Apayao on June 21, 2024. The screenings featured the 2017 film “Sinandomeng” directed by Byron Bryant, which addresses important themes such as agriculture, women empowerment, sustainability, and environment.
SineMasa’s reach to Kalinga and Apayao marked a milestone in bringing diverse stories and voices from Filipino filmmakers to audiences who otherwise might not have the opportunity to experience them. The project aims to create a bridge between the urban film industry and rural communities in order to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Filipino culture and contemporary issues.
In Buscalan, known for its vibrant culture and traditional tattoo art, EdukSine was warmly welcomed by an audience composed of children, elders, and farmers. The screening provided an opportunity for these community members to engage with Filipino films that reflect their own stories and struggles.
Similarly, in Conner, Apayao, the screening was met with enthusiasm from children and families. The community’s engagement with the film “Sinandomeng” sparked conversations about the themes of the film, particularly around sustainability and women’s roles in agriculture.
EdukSine extends its gratitude to the barangay officials in Buscalan for assisting and facilitating the event, as well as DepEd Apayao Superintendent Dr. Irene Angway, venue owner Ms. Girlie Beran Baguec of Girton Babes Travellers Inn, and Ms. Juliet Addatu for providing invaluable guidance and cooperation for the implementation of this initiative.
EdukSine, the “Filipino Netflix” for independent films, is dedicated to making Filipino films accessible and affordable to all Filipinos and to the world. The platform empowers Filipino independent filmmakers to reach broader audiences through culturally and socially relevant films by leveraging technology. With support from DOST Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), EdukSine continues to foster its fusion of technology, culture, and education, earning the honor as the Technology Company of the Year at the Asia CEO Awards 2023.
Looking ahead, EdukSine is committed to bringing more screenings to far-flung communities throughout the country. By continuously reaching out to remote areas, EdukSine democratizes access to independent films towards a more inclusive and culturally nurtured society.
