Last May 21, 2024 was a successful Masterclass in actual filmmaking by Direk Elwood Perez held at UPFI Film Center. Numerous students, professionals, and aspiring filmmakers made time to attend and learn from the El Maestro, himself. He was able to teach a room full of eager, passionate, and determined people through his excellent storytelling skills.
There was never a dull moment with El Maestro as he demonstrated the fundamentals of filmmaking in his own way. Direk Elwood Perez is known for his big hits like Ibulong Mo Sa Diyos (1988) starring Vilma Santos; Till We Meet Again (1985), I Can’t Stop Loving You (1985), and Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit (1989).
One of his bright and hardworking prodigies came back to the Philippines, Miss Karen Jane Sulutan Krukover after staying in New York for almost a year with her husband. El Maestro shared a story on how he was intrigued by his student’s talent and determination. He even had a nickname for her called iha/ija.
