This September, EdukSine spotlights Filipino films featuring stories about educators.

Here are the films to watch in celebration of National Teacher’s Month:
Ang Guro kong ‘di Marunong Magbasa (2017)

Synopsis: In this barrio, the number of child warriors grows when their illiterate teacher disappears and education is ignored.

Instalado (2017)
Director: Jason Paul Laxamana

Synopsis: Victor lives in a time when the dominant form of education is through installation, a process wherein bodies of knowledge can be installed directly into people’s brains. Victor cannot afford the sky-high cost of installation; which he believes is the key to escape his rural life. To raise money, Victor abandons farming and works as the housekeeper of a wealthy childhood friend who has become extremely successful after undergoing a series of installations.

KSP: Kapit sa Pangarap (2016)

Synopsis: Life is a struggle for JJ after his mother died from childbirth and his father suffered a stroke. To survive, he quit school and started working as a pedicab driver just to make ends meet. JJ must sacrifice his dreams of becoming a basketball player to provide for his family at such a young age.

The Chanters (2017)

Synopsis: Sarah Mae, the grand-daughter of the last chanter of the Panay Bukidnon tribe, obsessed with pop culture and readies herself for the visit of a sensational TV star to her school. As she perfects her dance, her grandfather, Lolo Ramon suffers the onset of dementia. Sarah Mae is tasked to help him complete the last of the remaining 12 epics, their tribe’s vanishing tradition.

September 21, 2023 marks the 51st anniversary of the Martial Law proclamation. We stand in solidarity with the Filipino people in never forgetting about the oppression and widespread human rights violations during this regime. With this, EdukSine dedicates a selection of movies with themes related to political and societal issues, governance, and the regime itself.
